Overview of Fantasmic!
Fantasmic! is truly spectacular. It serves as the signature evening entertainment at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. It takes place in a massive outdoor amphitheater that can accommodate as many as 10,000 people, the largest theater ever made by Disney.
The story itself takes place inside Mickey Mouse’s imagination, where he becomes the Sorcerer’s Apprentice. What begins as a magical dream filled with Disney heroes and heroines quickly turns into a battle between good and evil when Disney villains invade his fantasy world.
Unlike a traditional stage show, Fantasmic! uses the entire environment to immerse guests in Mickey’s dream world. The stage is in the form of a huge mountain surrounded by a moat filled with 1.9 million gallons of water. The show blends live performers, boats, fireworks, fire effects, explosions, giant projections with projection mapping, and large-scale special effects to create a story that unfolds across the entire outdoor stage and surrounding water.
Mickey’s imagination becomes the center of the story as Disney characters appear through massive water and mist projections. There are also some live performers with Disney characters appearing on moving boats, as well as on the mountain stage.
The climax of the show is the battle sequence featuring Maleficent’s dragon form and, of course, Mickey. The dragon is massive and appears on the mountain structure behind the lagoon and breathes fire across the water, towards the audience. SPOILER ALERT: Mickey wins the battle.
The show then transitions into a celebratory finale featuring Disney characters sailing together in a magical procession, filling the amphitheater with music, fireworks, dance, and light.
Who should see Fantasmic?
This is a major show, and we consider it a worthwhile experience, especially for anyone wanting to see something spectacular. See this show if you love musical theater, Disney music, Disney stories, Disney princesses, villains, and other characters (especially Mickey), special effects, or outdoor nighttime shows.
Queue, seating and viewing information
The queue for Fantasmic! is outdoors, and guests will experience Florida weather, including heat or rain.
Once inside the amphitheater area, guests are seated in a large open-air outdoor stadium-style theater with tiered seating. The theater is designed so that all guests face the central lagoon and “mountain” stage, where the show takes place. There is no cover, so guests will be exposed to the Florida weather.
The seats are hard metal benches without backs. Honestly, they’re pretty miserable to sit on for any length of time. If that’s an issue for you, you might want to bring something soft to sit on. Even a sweater could help soften the seat.

Seating may feel crowded during peak times, especially for later showings or peak season dates. Depending on crowd levels, guests may be seated close to others, and arrival time will affect viewing position.
- Center seating offers the most balanced view
- Middle rows are ideal for full visual experience
- Front rows may experience light mist or water spray, theatrical fog, smoke, and they’ll sense the heat from the fire effects.
- Far side seats may have slightly angled views
The amphitheater is large, and sightlines are generally good throughout the venue.
This amphitheater seats almost 8,000 guests, plus there’s room for about 2,000 guests in the standing room only area.
Wheelchair/ECV information:
Guests using wheelchairs or ECVs may remain in their mobility device during the performance. Accessible seating and companion seating areas are available, and Cast Members will assist with directions.
The queue is on the long side with some inclines/declines.
There are two designated wheelchair/ECV areas. Guests can either sit in the top row of the amphitheater or in a reserved bottom-row area. Keep in mind that guests in the bottom row will experience some of the effects more fully, such as heat from the fires and fog.
More details about Fantasmic!
At times Fantasmic! is slow-moving and pleasant. During other times it’s loud and chaotic and may seem scary to those who are sensitive. Fantasmic! includes loud music, fireworks, and sudden sound effects, including explosions, villain sequences, and fire-based effects.
The show plays at night, and there are frequent shifts in lighting, projections, and special effects across the water and mountain structures.
Guests sensitive to loud noise may want to use hearing protection. We’ve noticed that guests can buy ear muffs for children in the gift/store area right outside the entrance to the amphitheater. Of course, there’s no guarantee that they’ll always have them.
Fog, haze, and water effects are used throughout the show, especially during villain sequences and the dragon scene.
Guests remain seated for the duration of the performance.
Our Additional Cautions and FAQs:
Is Fantasmic! scary?
Keep in mind that this is our subjective opinion. Young children and those who are very sensitive could find this show to be very scary. It’s not unusual to see families leave the amphitheater during the show with crying children. Still, most kids and adults won’t find it scary, or at least not too scary to enjoy.
It does include villain sequences, explosions, a gigantic fire-breathing dragon, fire effects, loud sounds, and dark scenes that may feel intense for some guests, especially children and those sensitive to sensory input.
If you or your children are sound sensitive, this would be the show to wear noise-canceling headphones to.
To reduce the impact of the effects, it might help to sit as far from the stage as you can.
Is Fantasmic! good for sensory-sensitive guests?
Guests sensitive to noise or visual stimulation may find this show overwhelming.
Fantasmic! can be intense from a sensory standpoint due to loud fireworks, loud music, flashing lights, fire effects, explosions, constantly changing sights, and dramatic villain scenes. The stage is almost always filled with light, motion, special effects and changing visuals.
Fog/haze effects and smoke:
The show uses theatrical fog and haze effects throughout several scenes. These effects are mostly contained to the stage and water areas, but depending on wind and seating location, some haze may drift toward the audience. The same with the fire, which can create smoke and can also drift.
Does Fantasmic! feel crowded?
The amphitheater can feel crowded during entry and exit, but especially after the show ends. Leaving the show can feel like a struggle for those who are sensitive to crowds. Guests tend to rush out, and it can feel tight and chaotic.
If this is an issue for you, you may wish to leave the show before it ends. In that case, if you can sit towards the back of the amphitheater, closer to the exits, and at the end of an aisle, that would make it much easier to leave.
Seating areas may place guests in close proximity to others.
Is there any motion in this theater?
There is no motion simulation.
