Is Renting a Portable Scooter for My Orlando Trip the Best Option?
You’ve decided that you’d like to rent a mobility scooter during your trip to Orlando. You may want to consider whether a portable scooter is the best option for you.
Our awesome sponsor, Buena Vista Rentals, offers a travel scooter that can make your trip more comfortable and convenient. You can see that travel scooter here (if you do rent it, ask for the free accessory our readers get with the code “dizabled”).
First of all, what is a portable scooter?

It’s a mobility scooter that you can break down into pieces. The pieces can then be put in your car trunk, in the back of your SUV or in your van. You’ll be able to transport the scooter wherever you go.
Buena Vista Rentals portable scooter breaks down into 5 pieces. It looks and feels like a full-sized scooter with a more compact frame. It costs almost half of what it costs to rent a scooter from Disney World. The heaviest piece weighs approximately 40-50 pounds. The weight capacity for this scooter is 300 pounds.
Why choose a portable scooter when you’re in Orlando?
Will you be driving your own vehicle (or a rental) during your Orlando trip? If so, consider renting a portable scooter. What’s great about this is that you can rent a single portable scooter that you can take everywhere you go, such as:
- Your hotel or home rental
- All of the theme parks
- Entertainment attractions or complexes such as ICON Park
- shopping
- restaurants
- etc.
You won’t have to go scooterless pretty much anywhere, and you won’t need to keep renting scooters multiple times at different locations. You won’t have to walk to and from the scooter rental locations to get or give back your scooter. This can make your trip so much more simple and comfortable.
We used a portable scooter for years for my wife. We were able to take it everywhere we went in Orlando. It was so convenient. She found it reasonably comfortable and enjoyed jetting around on it. We never had to worry about how she would get around.
Who doesn’t need a portable scooter? Or who shouldn’t use one?
There may be people who don’t really need a portable scooter or who shouldn’t use one.
First, if you won’t have a car to drive, a portable scooter might be impractical. However, you may be able to use something like Mears accessible taxis to transport you with your portable scooter.
Second, if you’re staying in a Disney World-owned resort and your plans only include visiting the Disney World parks or Disney Springs during your stay, you can use Disney World transportation to get around with your scooter. There’s no need for a portable scooter since most Disney World transportation is accessible.
Third, some people will not be able to handle breaking down and putting together the portable scooter. Keep in mind that the heaviest piece once the scooter is disassembled is 40-50 pounds. If you don’t have someone in your party who can handle lifting this amount of weight, you’ll want to skip the portable scooter and consider other scooter/wheelchair options.
How do you use a portable scooter?
Buena Vista Rentals has a helpful video that explains how to break down the portable scooter, how to store it in the car, and how to put it back together once you reach your destination. Check out that video below.
